My vow of silence lesson about conversation clutter

I’m on the last day of an 11 day vow of silence. One thing I’ve learned is that often, conversations with strangers can create unnecessary clutter. I’m a street performer and I busk on violin.  On the 4^th day of my vow, a usual situation happened: I was between songs and a person came up to me and asked me a question. The question happened to be how long I’ve been playing my violin. My gut instinct said he cares less about how long I’ve played and he just wants to make mindless conversation. I eagerly pointed to my laminated sign that explained I was on a vow. I was never so happy to point to that sign. He understood, but remained standing skeptically for 30 seconds longer to apparently see if I was somehow going to change my mind just for him. Once he saw my unbudged position…
